BOOK REVIEW | IF YOU DARE BY A.R. TORRE (SPOILER FREE)

August 2, 2017

Disclaimer: I don't how informative and helpful this review is going to be because I'm still SHOOKETH.

Synopsis
The rules are the same. I can't open the door. I can't leave. I can't kill anyone.

The only difference is, I don't set the rules anymore. Guards in grey uniforms do. It is everything I never wanted and everything I always deserved. I write to you now, from a prison cell. My home for the next twenty to thirty years.

That's the going term for murder. - Goodreads

Plot
A.R. Torre knows how to grab the readers attention within the first few lines. What makes her stand out to me is the way she writes her stories and how each book in the Deanna Madden series never feels redundant, but unique in it's own way. Without a doubt, the plot of If You Dare is my favorite by far. The story is told in two tenses, past and present, which at first threw me off, but I quickly got the hang of it. It also picks up a couple months after the last book, Do Not Disturb.

I never try to give too much information about the plot of A.R. Torre's books because I feel like going in without knowing a lot makes the reading experience better. All I can say is that it's not nothing like the first two books in the series *wink wink*.

Characters
Deanna. I cannot tell you how emotionally attached I am to this character. Deanna Madden is a mess, and I'm addicted to her. If You Dare brings a side of Deanna that I haven't seen before. Deanna was vulnerable and personal with the readers. We got to see a little bit more of her character and watched her explore the feelings that she's been suppressing since the beginning of the series. In this book, we got a little less Jessica Reilly and a lot more Deanna Madden. She's not an easy character to love. She's broken inside. She struggles with the dream of being normal and the reality of being a monster.

Jeremy. I'm so happy we got to see a lot more of Jeremy in this third book than we did in the first two. Jeremy is such a huge part of Deanna life and sanity, whether she wants to admit it or not. The readers can see the way he makes her feel. However, I did get annoyed with Jeremy in this book just the slightest because I think that he sometimes forgets that Deanna is not a normal girl and he can't mold her into the person he wants her to be. But towards the end, I just wanted to hold him lol. He's a good guy, I can't ignore that.

Mike. Mike made a few appearances in this novel, not as many as I would've liked, but whenever we did get to visit his character, I was nothing more than excited. I've found a new appreciation for Mike. At first, I was put off by him, but I think he's growing on me. His relationship with Deanna is one of the strongest that I've seen in books. It's not your typical friendship, but that's what makes it unique. There's a level of understanding that is shared between the two and as someone looking in, I just know that the relationship is nothing but pure, even if it is sexually induced sometimes.

Simon. I'm only mentioning his character because he does have a significant role in this book, compared to the first two. With everything surrounding him, I only pity the dude. Drugs have made him absolutely mental.

Writing
I've said this before and I'll say it again, Torre's writing is addicting. She makes you so engrossed in the story that you can't help but stay up til 3 AM reading because you just can't put the book down.

The Deanna Madden series has a lot of mature content, and compared to the first two books, this one is a little toned down. Because we get a lot more of Deanna's feelings and thoughts, we don't read about her camming almost every chapter. I actually don't even remember reading more than 2 full and detailed cam sessions in this book.

Final Thoughts

If You Dare is my favorite in the Deanna Madden series, hands down. One thing that makes it stand out is how different it is from the first two books. In The Girl in 6E and Do Not Disturb, there was always something happening in the world outside of Deanna's and somehow, both worlds intertwined and it played out with blood being shed. This book however, we're only in Deanna's world and that alone makes it 100% more personal and intimate. This book is nothing but an emotional journey, and towards the end, you will cry.

I cannot rave about this book enough. It is written so beautifully and wonderfully. Even though there is not a fourth book to purchase right now, I know this isn't going to be the last in the series. I know that there is so much more to know and uncover about Deanna Madden. I would love nothing more than to dive into her past full on and unravel the secrets that I know she's hiding from us.

So A.R. Torre, I'll be waiting.

Rating
5 OUT OF 5 MOTHERFUCKING STARS!!!!!!

Until next time,
