VAMPIRE ACADEMY SERIES REVIEW

January 12, 2016

Disclaimer: This review will have spoilers towards the end.

Vampire Academy is an American best-selling series of six young-adult paranormal romance novels by author Richelle Mead. It tells the story of Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway, a seventeen/eighteen-year-old Dhampir girl, who is training to be a guardian of her Moroi best friend, Vasilisa "Lissa" Dragomir. In the process of learning how to defeat Strigoi (the evil undead vampires) in St. Vladimir's Academy, Rose finds herself caught in a forbidden romance with her instructor, Dimitri Belikov, while having an unbreakable psychic bond with Lissa. - Synopsis from Wikapedia

I started this six book series on December 2, 2015 and finished it on January 5, 2016. Vampire Academy was overall a wonderful series that I will remember for the rest of my life. Not only was it fun to read, but it taught me a lot about character, friendship, sacrifices, and love. I think this is a series that everyone should get their hands on at one point in their lives. I did have a few problems with it here and there but all in all I would rate this series a 5 out of 5 stars. The first half of this post is of reviews that are divided by each book in the series. Their spoiler free and don't give away too much about the plot. I wrote these reviews as a read the book just so my thoughts on it were fresh. The second half of this post will contain spoilers as well as my thoughts on a few of the characters.

Enjoy !

Vampire Academy: As the first book in the series, I thought it was great. I laughed so hard at times and that's pretty rare when it comes to reading. The characters where amazing, especially Rose. I felt as if a lot of teenage girls can relate to some of the issues she was faced with (besides the whole vampire thing). Apart from the whole vampire aspect of the book, it was basically your typical high school drama. The only thing that kind of bugged me (just a little bit) was the relationship between Dimitri and Rose. Maybe I didn't pay enough attention to them, but I felt as if their feelings towards each other were fast paced. But overall, I loved it! I rated Vampire Academy a 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads.

Frostbite: I enjoyed this book so much more than the first one. Rose's relationship with her mom, Janine, was one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much. Her relationship with Dimitri progressed so much better than it had in the first book. I did cry a little bit towards the end, but can you blame me? Frostbite was down right amazing. There never was a dull moment and I can't believe I read it all in 2 days. I rated Frostbite a 5 out of 5 stars on Goodreads.

Shadow Kiss: Holy cow. This book was jam packed with action, romance, and heartbreak. I was at the edge of my seat the entire time, never wanting to put the book down. With each chapter ending in a cliffhanger, how could I ? The relationship between Rose and Dimitri really blossomed in Shadow Kiss and was done beautifully. The ending did not come as a shocker to me because I spoiled one of the biggest plot twist in the series a couple years back. However, I was still in awe. I am a little hesitate to read Blood Promise because of the skeptical reviews, but I have a feeling it's going to be great! I rated Shadow Kiss a 5 out of  stars on Goodreads.

Blood Promise: So far, Blood Promise is the weakest book in the series. The beginning was excruciatingly slow. I felt as if after reading the book, the first 275 pages were just fillers and unnecessary. However, the second half was bomb. As soon as Dimitri and Rose reunited the book started getting interesting and I finished it off in a couple of hours. The plot twist and surprises toward the end were unexpected, which made me forget about the first half of the book all together. I was contemplating on whether I should rate this a 3 or 4 stars. I ended up rating it 3, but then changed it to 4 because although the first half wasn't so great, the second half and ending sold me.

Spirit Bound: My first and immediate reaction to the ending of this book was WHAT THE F%@K. Literally. This book left me in utter shock because of how great it was. I thought that Shadow Kiss was the best in the series, but as of right now, Spirit Bound is on a whole other level of awesomeness. I can't even formulate what this book made me feel. So many events took place and wasn't able to put it down. I read it all in a day and some hours. If I can say one thing about this book is that Rose Hathaway is my favorite person in the entire world. Yes, she's taken part in some activities that were stupid. but overall, I want her as a friend. As I type this review, my hands are shaking. I think I'm ready to read Last Sacrifice. I rated Spirit Bound a 5 out 5 stars on Goodreads.

Last Sacrifice: I'm so sad that this series has come to an end for me. Last Sacrifice started with a bang and kept me engaged through it all. However, I did find a few things that bothered me. 1.) The way Rose treated Adrian 2.) Rose's obsession with Dimitri. I mean I know you love him and all, but is he the only thing you can think about? 3.) Not knowing what happened to Sydney and the real reason she was helping Abe and 4.) The ending felt a bit forced and too jolly good for my liking. Aside from all of that I did enjoy this book. I rated Last Sacrifice a 4 out of 5 starts on Goodreads.

SPOILERSSSSSSSSS !!!!!! SPOILERSSSSSSSSS !!!! SPOILERSSSSSS !!!!!!!

SPOILERSSSSSS !!!!!! SPOILERSSSSSSSSS !!!!!!!! SPOILERSSSSSSSS !!!!!!!

Dimitri and Rose. At first, I wasn't so found of their relationship in the first 2 books. It was only until Shadow Kiss that I finally got on board with their relationship, which is kind of funny considering the fact that that's the book where Dimitri turns Strigoi. I was lowkey here for Strigoi Dimitri though. He was, for the lack of better words, hot. I was a  little annoyed with him when he was restored back to a dhampir and refused to see Rose, but I did sympathize with him. And as for Rose Hathaway, she was something. Funny, reckless, selfish, etc. I wanted to strangle her. I rolled my eyes at her. I cried with her. I rooted for her. I am here for Rose. Yes, she is not the most likable character, but she happens to be my favorite.

Lissa. It was only until Spirit Bound did I start liking Lissa's character. Before she was just whiny and weak. I felt like she depended on Rose too much that she had a hard time being her own person. However, in Spirit Bound and more importantly, Last Sacrifice, Lissa showed her strength and I started to appreciate her character more.

Christian. I don't have much to say about him other than he was very well loved by me. From the beginning, I've been rooting for him and his relationship with Lissa. I was a little upset with Mead in Last Sacrifice because she didn't really explore how Christian was feeling after he found out his aunt, Tasha, had killed the queen. WHICH WAS A COMPLETE SURPRISE FOR ME. I was deadlock set on Daniella or Ariana committing the crime.

Adrian. My baby Adrian. Out of all the characters, Adrian is the one who made me feel the most emotions. He was torn and broken, but he had Rose. He had Rose and Rose treated him like shit. I don't think she ever really gave him a chance and I think he knew that. His reaction when he saw Dimitri and Rose all close together behind the car in Last Sacrifice almost brought tears to my eyes. I heard that he gets together with Sydney in the spin off series, Bloodlines, which I am excited to read soon. He deserves someone better than Rose.

Abe and Janine. Rose's parents. I was shock to find out that Abe was Rose's mysterious dad, but at the same time I wasn't. They had identical personalities and his worry for her in Blood Promise revealed that. The progress made between Janine and Rose from Frostbite to Last Sacrifice is beautiful. They really grew on each other.

And there you have it. I will forever hold Vampire Academy dear to my heart because not only was it an incredible read, but it was the first series I ever completed. I hope you all get a chance to read it.

Thank you for reading!
